At last, the South African justice system is finally ready to complete its long-drawn out process. In my humble opinion, if he is not in jail tonight, then we will have another OJ Simpson on our hands.

I've said this next bit before but I don't think this whole affair shows the South African justice system in the best light. One completely innocent woman killed, one and a half years ago and we are still no nearer a verdict, despite Pistorius admitting immediately after the event in February 2013, that he was the one who who shot her.

Mick-the-Miller......Mr and Mrs Steenkamp might care, don't you think ? Not to mention the millions of people all over the world who watched him perform at the Olympics.

I sincerely apologise for hijacking your thread.
And thank you Canary42.

Now that I've started, I won't be able to stop...
I had something to say but cannot for the life of me remember wether it was about Pistorius or italics.
At the end of the first day of Oscar Pistorius’s sentencing hearing, here’s where we are:

Pistorius’s defence team has called three out of four witnesses to testify in mitigation of sentencing: a psychologist, a Correctional Services social worker, and the athlete’s manager.

Social worker Joel Maringa told the court that he recommended Pistorius undergo house arrest for three years, with 16 hours of community service per month.

The state’s Gerrie Nel, who will be pushing for the most punitive possible jail term, called this suggestion “shockingly inappropriate”.

Pistorius’s psychologist and manager, respectively, have painted the picture of a broken man who is nonetheless humble and charitable, and who poses no danger to society.
/a broken man who is nonetheless humble and charitable, and who poses no danger to society. /

of course, none of those circumstances preclude a custodial sentence - i'm sure there are many people in prison who could claim the same
We have only heard the defence lawyer. Tomorrow Gerrie Nel will have the opportunity to cross-examine Pistorius’s manager Peet van Zyl.

After that, the defence is expected to call their final witness, whereafter the state will begin to lead their own witnesses in evidence.

The judge said this mini trial could last less than a week!
My opinion for what it's worth is that if he is let back on the streets we will be seeing him back in court again before too long. This man cannot control his temper and is a loose cannon. Didn't I read that this 'broken man' was out clubbing recently and got into another altercation?
It's amazing isn't it, the trial which dragged on and on, is over and now the sentencing is going to take days !! Why ???
Mikey444 - I agree, the only people I have any sympathy for are the victim and her family and friends - Pistorius has proved himself to be a very nasty bit of work and I don't really care if I never hear anything about him again!

Judge Masipa will hear arguments from the prosecution and the defence, and from psychological and probation experts, before deciding on sentencing. And we thought English law was slow!
