My question is prompted by the author John Grisham's remarks reported in this article.

I've often wondered, and perhaps someone can answer this. When they say 'the police found 50,000 images on his computer', are they referring to a neatly catalogued porn library of paid for downloaded stuff, or just looking at the person's temporary browser cache, and prosecuting them on that basis?

That has implications for any accidental stumbler.
I don't think any one person could accidentally stumble on 50,000 images.
Make it 10 then. They always seem to mention a large number, but the principle is the same.
What I mean is, anyone who visits a bad site will download images from it to their hard drive, whether they know it or not, and even if they recognise straight away what they've done, leave the site immediately and clear their browser.

The images are technically still there on the disk, downloaded by them.
HC, what a coincidence....I make personalised cards and not long ago a lady asked me to make a 'new home' card with fuchsia curtains at the window. I actually googled it because I wasn't sure of the colour!

(Absolutely true, I kid you not. Mind you, I can't say I found anything dodgy).
