I mentioned this on another thread recently but no one explained the reason for their preference. The thing is that I am genuinely at a loss to understand why so many people say they won't eat fish, or indeed any seafood. In our house ( I do the cooking!) we eat all kinds of fish and shellfish. When I was a child we lived near the coast and frequently had plaice, skate, mackerel, crab, mussels, winkles, whelks and many other seafoods, all of which I eat today. Mrs R did not have these in her childhood but now loves them.
Please could somebody explain why they find such foods unpalatable? Or perhaps join me in recommending them? I really would like to know why people find, let's say, a grilled sea-bass unacceptable?

My mother used to tell me of when the fish cart came round the village selling herrrings at 12 for a 1d (and I mean an old penny). Of course that was long before we joined the EU and let the foreigners steal all our fish.

Shaney, wonderful that your father was a trawlerman; but I think the Prunier was for herring drifters: correct me if I'm wrong!
Maybe there's a clue in the last few answers. Bones.
I absolutely cannot handle fish bones in my food.
I love the taste of kippers but there's no way on earth I could eat one.
Mackerel are lovely and as long as you slide the fillet off the bone once it's cooked, they're pretty easy to deal with.
I miss out on so much lovely fish because of grit, slime and bones.
I can see why many would just avoid it altogether.
The Prunier was for drifters but they all worked in whatever boats they could get on .My Dad sailed in both but of course trawling was more lucrative .
Every year at the Maritime Festival the lifeboatmen cook up herrings on a barbie and dish them up in a buttered roll .I'm drooling thinking about it :)

Shaney, another thing I've just remembered; the Evening News used to run a competition where you had to predict the number of crans that would win the trophy. (I bet everyone else on here are thinking we're talking squit!)

Shaney, thanks for the link, I'll try to get there next year. Hope your dog is OK ~ my latest black Lab is called Blakeney; four years old now and thinks he's still a puppy!
Poor old Shaney went to the big kennel in the sky some while ago now :(

Sorry to hear that ; I've been there several times and it's very painful. Have you not got another?
No we haven't ...I would love to have another dog rabet but circumstances don't allow these days unfortunately .I have mobilty problems now and it wouldn't be fair on the dog .
Love all seafood except squid and Octo's - sweet things :(

Goodnight all you friendly people :-)
I think a lot of people are put off by the texture of many types of seafood and find it either slimy or rubbery.
I love oysters, eel, squid, octopus, cockles and mussels, but can't bear whelks just because of the texture. Also white fish can be dull but good sauces or even just a simple butter and herb sauce can transform it. I once had an ammoniated skate, which has put me off ever eating it again.
Tried prawns once. The taste was out of this world, loved them. But within 20 minutes I was violently sick. Other seafood I'm fine with but prawns just don't seem to like me
