On one occasion I was about to start packing using a Bag for life plucked from my handbag when the cashier pointed out the handle was ready to snap and replaced it.
You don't have to queue at Customer Services and make a hoo ha just ask at the checkout if it can be replaced as it has become useless.

I have posted on another thread on this theme that it was common practice in the 50s/60s to buy a carrier bag (brown paper and string handles) for 2d, worth more than 5p is these days. Unfortunately, if it was raining, it was a rush to get home before the bag burst and released its contents on to the pavement.

They must be charging a fortune for them.

I think they've taken it just a tad too far by charging for loose goods which require a paper bag. If you go into the baker for four rolls you're charged for the bag.
I visit Spain regularly and visited Ireland quite regularly in the past and it wouldn't occur to me to leave the house without a carrier bag..but a paper bag?
Avon Reps have to start charging for a paper bag, who do they donate the proceeds to? It's rather a grey area. I think they should have stuck to carrier bags only (as is in Spain and Ireland).
Apologies for going ever so slightly off tangent.

There is no statutory requirement to charge for such bags, Kylesmum.
"The Regulations specify a number of exemptions where there is no requirement to charge for carrier bags . . .
Bags of any size used solely to contain exempted items listed in the Regulations:
Unpackaged food for human or animal consumption; such as loose fruit and vegetables, bakery items, pick and mix sweets and dry animal food . . ."
