I have decided to decorate the study. Nothing too difficult, just painting the walls and the skirting board and door.
I have never done any decorating in my life (always had a man in) but as I now have more time and less money, I thought I'd give it a go.

What I need is a procedure. What do I do first? What next? When and how do I do the ceiling? Do I need any special equipment, apart from paint and brushes?

All answers gratefully received.

do not get sponges to paint - use rollers - they are useless unless you buy the really, really expensive ones. first, empty the room of everything you can and plonk the rest in the middle of the room in a pile and cover with old sheets (you can get these from charity shops if necessary - cheaper than diy stores). hoover and dust the room throughout and the wash...

This'll make you laugh. Two years ago a friend of mine bought a little town house. When she moved in she discovered that the newly painted lounge was not as it seemed when she went to view.

On moving in, she discovered that the previous occupant had painted around the furniture that was against the walls. There was a white, settee silhouette on one wall, a white, cabinet silhouette on another wall and a tv table and stand silhouette in the corner of two walls!

She was livid!

Preparation, preparation and more preparation. Clear the room as best as poss. Buy brushes, covers, oh all sorts of gadgets and gizmos, then at the end , call in a tradesperson to do it!....but take full credit for it yourself. It'll be our secret Tilly.

Apple white can be cold.....x
we've got ivory lace, though how yellowy it looks seems to depend on how much light it gets.

It's an east facing, little, spare room that has become a study. I don't actually spend much time in there now as my studying days are well and truly over. I may turn it into a little den for myself with a big squashy armchair.
