I've been played Civilization Beyond Earth for over an hour this morning (the video is the intro from the start of the game); the game-play is much the same as previous versions but with a different hierarchy of research and so different technologies and items, colonies instead of cities and aliens instead of barbarians.

I always seem to end up in the strategy of rapid expansion and consequently my resources and military units get spread too thinly so that civilization development is slow.

What strategy do you find is successful in Civilization games? How long should one stick with the initial city/colony before expanding with settlers/colonists?

If you like Civilization games then yes. That first video is just a cut-scene intro, this video shows some gameplay.

I have not yet found an effective strategy, but I'm only a mere beginner.

I find it extremely addictive!!!

I still feel like a beginner even though I've previously played Civ1 (on Amiga), Civ3 and Civ5 (on PC); my civilizations never seemed to prosper sufficiently to get close to defeating the others. I think that I won one time but I have no idea what I did differently so it must have been a fluke.
