Can you remember when Calabrese was really expensive/rare and you served it at dinner parties in small quantities?

That word was removed from the swear filter a few weeks back but seems to have wormed its way back in.
Ratatouille was really far out once and now I often prepare it. Bit of a caveat re exotic veg. Just about any veg grown at home tastes exotic cf. Supermarket stuff.
Love spicy tomato soup (minus vodka) but have lost my favourite recipe. Good chilled or hot. Nothing worse than cream of tomato soup. Too sweet.

Vice versa; at one time turkey was a luxury and goose was common. Now turkey is common and goose is a luxury.
I remember when we only had chicken on special occasions. Beef was cheap, now it is the other way round.
We keep dried piri piri peppers for these spicy dishes. Used sparingly they have chilly powder beaten and last ages.
I remember the first time I tasted mayonnaise, sweetcorn and brown sugar.
When I was a student in the 60s, the only place to buy a red or green pepper was in a posh deli!

I recall that Vesta beef Curry was considered a real walk on the wild side in the 60s.
I can remember when limes were just about unobtainable outside London and even in London pawpaw, passion fruit, mango were all fantastically expensive. Oh and lichees.

Anything 'a la crème' seemed very decadent in the seventies.

I remember being served Porc a la crème at a friend's dinner party and thinking it was the most luxurious thing I had ever tasted.
