Has anyone else had this - I made a purchase on ebay last week for £7.96, used Paypal to pay. Whilst looking at my online banking yesterday, I saw that a direct debit had been set up payable to Paypal for £7.96 monthly. I deleted it immediately but wish I had taken a note of the reference number so I can give them a ring. Is this normal?

Open EBay & look at your messages, it should be there.
If you link your bank account directly (rather than via a debit card number) to PayPal it uses the direct debit system to make payments, so there might be nothing unusual involved. (The DD would probably have automatically been cancelled after a single payment anyway).
I've never had that happen before, I wonder when you were setting up the payment, you inadvertently ticked for a regular payment rather than an one-off? Well done you for spotting it!

Chris might have hit the nail on the head, I did pay via bank account rather than Credit card. I will any messages on ebay.

Boxy, it was only a bit of luck that I saw it as I was adding up my monthly outgoings.
It may not have been a monthly payment. When I used to pay PayPal direct through bank rather than card I had a direct debit listed on my account, it always used to state the most recent payment in the listing, so it would change regularly.
Did you have any money in your PayPal account when you made your purchase. If not, then the money you spent on ebay has come directly out of your bank account (the bank account that is linked to your ebay account). It will show on your bank statement, as a direct debit, but it shouldn't show as a monthly payment.
It will be a DD but a one off not monthly. I have my bank account linked to PayPal and any payments show as a DD to PayPal.
Yes, as Eddie says, your purchase was for £7.96 and your bank account shows a payment of £7.96. My guess is it has has come out of your bank account, rather than your PayPal account, and it will show on your bank statement as a direct debit.

It was listed under the direct debit tab along with all the other direct debits and standing order payments.
^^ that is exactly how mine show. It is a DD but as said, a one off NOT a monthly payment. PayPal takes the payment by using the DD system but it only takes payments you authorise one by one.

Thanks Eddie, I wonder why the put the word monthly next to it, makes life very confusing.
If you've deleted it, you may need to set it back up again, in case you need to pay through Paypal again.
Mine shows up under my direct debits, but money is only taken out when there's not enough money in my Paypal account to cover the payment of any purchases.

Blimey, I'll wait to see what happens next time I buy through my bank account.
