He wrote a short story which he read on Radio 4. It was set in the time he was a student at Belfast Tech and he would go with his mates to have a cheap lunch in a rough cafe in Upper North St in Belfast. The Irish Stew was everybody's favourite. It was a substantial bowl of spuds, carrots, onions, and a bit of meat and only cost 6p. That's 2, 1/2p in decimal.

He was about 10 years older than me. Should what he saw have been given more publicity? I ate in the same cafe for years.

The stew I ate there over the years did me no harm so what publicity the story got is probably immaterial.

It was a different era sandy, you cant compare with nowadays. I lived in Belfast for 35 years ,we change and move on!
British Restaurants became Victory restaurants in 1984 ( the book ) innit ?

Someone complained about an egg in Booth Hall canteen ( now closed ) and reported seeing it back with its clucky colleagues, for re-sale, with the tell-tale bite out of it !
