My son fell on his back Friday night and the pain is making him feel sick. The pain is middle and lower back, there is no sign of a bruise. What should he put on it? Would should he take? Answers from anyone welcome, Thanks

48hours ago your son fell on his back....I am assuming that he has no problem moving his legs and that has had no vomiting or headache.

Almost certainly, this is no big deal and i would take ibuprofen 400mgms up to every four hours with a hot bath and this should settle over the next week.

Taking a pessimistic view, he may have cracked or even broken the transverse process ( part of vertebra) but even so ....no big deal and the treatment is the same.

monitor the situation for the next 3-4 days.
As a matter of interest how old is your son?

Thanks Sqad. his legs are ok and no headache. He hasn't been sick but just feels sick due to pain. He managed to go for a run yesterday (Sunday), but feels a lot worse today. The fall was Friday night, falling backwards onto stone steps.
Question Author
Furrypusscat, he's an adult.
he hurt his back on Friday, ran on sunday ?
Question Author
Yes, Anne. He's had his first dose of Ibuprofen and it's helping.
I asked about his age in case he was a younger person and would have suggested A&E if he was,
I think a bit soon for running with such an injury however gentle exercise could be beneficial to avoid stiffness. I would agree with Sqad and monitor the situation over the next few days.
Question Author
Thanks Furrypusscat, I'll tell him to do gentle exercise.

he is an adult though methyl. so that decision is up to him I'd say ?

Isn't it fairly obvious he fell backwards onto some steps and will have bruised some bones and probably pulled some muscles too. It's bound to hurt, If he ran on Sunday I can't see he needs A&E nor an ambulance. Severe pain does make you feel sick, especially back pain in my experience.

Thank you. He feels a lot better today and has gone to work this morning.
Thanks for the feedback.
A friend of mine aged 65 fell against a cement planter in her garden last year. Doctor wanted to hospitalise her as her back was completely black and blue. However she wouldn't leave her little dog and so a friend helped out. She was like this for 4 weeks and she got better.

I do think far too many people go to A&E at the drop of a hat. Not you Marijn or your son.
JJ...good post and i agree entirely.
