Mattress Disposal

We have a king size mattress which is redundant, it has the correct fire resistant label and is in reasonably good order but has been replaced with an orthopaedic type. It must be useful for someone, are there any organisations which recycle mattresses or do I have to bite the bullet and pay someone to take it to local tip?

Our council would come and take it away for free - allowed 3 such collections per yr.
Shelter/ some simiar charity might collect it if you got in touch?

Freecycle it, most places have local freecycle site where you post the add and people collect your unwanted items. Google freecycle or freegle and join them...you will be surprised how many people want your unwanted times.

We have discovered by having to do 2 house clearances for parents houses that mattresses are the one thing no-one would take and they had to go to the tip on each occassion.

Our council charge to take bulky item so check with your local one.

Ubasses, I see on our local freecycle just how many times mattresses are taken so perhaps it's more there they are taken than anywhere else.

Unless a mattress is almost new and in perfect condition then you will find that no charity will want it.

I have two old ones propped up against a wall in my spare bedroom. They are used as a cat climbing wall and a high bed for snoozing on.

I think that you are going to have to get it dumped - your local council is your best place to go to on information regarding this. My council picks up large items on a weekly basis - don't know what they charge these days.

It maybe Dunnitail that they are taken by individuals but none of the recycling charities or auction houses seem willing along with the second hand shops.

You are right Ubasses it is the individual who will take them, I must say I personally wouldn't but it depends how desperate you are for such items. Our council charge for disposal of bulky items too...so in the first instance I would try freecycle ans if all else fails, pay for disposal.

Depending on where you live waterbored, if the fire tag thingy is on it and the mattress isnt stained or dirty, Preen, a charity for shelter and the homeless, will take it away for you.

SOFA Project will also take them if they are clean, but your best bet will be Freecycle or Freegle, don't chuck it if you c an recycle it, someone will need it:)
