hip replacement!

my husband is on the waiting list for a hip replacement, we were wondering if anyone could tell us ANYTHING about them! ie. how long in hospital, the recuperation time and getting back to normal?

They try to keep major ortho patients in hospital for as short a time as possible to limit potential risk infections. Normal hip replacements are in for 5-6 days. Recuperration is dependent on how you deal with the physio but if the programme given is followed then its a surprisingly short length of time.

Had Three done, first one in december 2004 it dislocated a month later, but the hospital said it was caused a piece of arthritic bone not through misuse, and the other hip in September this year all three ops kept me in hospital about a week,each time,Although this last one is taking longer for the muscles to get back to normal ,buts its great, as long as you remember to obey the simple rules and dont go jumping of hedges and the like.I am able to tie my shoelaces now and dont have to use velcro shoes so much unless i am feeling lazy Good luck to your husband,hope it all goes well for him Down side no sex for six weeks!!!!!

Depends a little on his age. Most patients over 75 generally have their joint cemented in, and are able to fully weight bear immediately following a check X-ray. Younger patients may have an uncemented replacement (because of the likelihood of further replacements further down the line - it's a lot easier to replace an uncemented joint). People with uncemented joints have to progress weight-bearing more gradually. Hospital stay in either case is generally 5 to 7 days.
