but is there such a thing as a victimless crime?
Ive recently competed an 18 month probation order and as part of that order I had to "address" the fact that there was no such thing as a victimless crime.
Rubbish. Of course most crimes have victims, but what about someone who grows a couple of cannabis plants for his own use? Wheres the victim? Not so long ago homosexuality was illegal, where was the victim there between 2 consenting adults?
Why does the law seek to criminalise what people do in there own homes
(in this case grow a herb for their own use and have sex the way they want)?
As I said in my thread below, just a bit philosophical at the mo)

There are definitely victimless crimes. Some have been legalised but for now it varies from country to country as to whether these actions are criminal or not. Eg prostitution, cannabis growing, homosexuality, assisted suicide and gambling.
Do you include potential victims as in speeding?
Speeding is most definitely a crime that can have victims - that wasn't used in the examples.

I have read of people getting in trouble for taking food from Supermarket bins - that is ridiculous.
Is it not a part of the recovery process to believe that every, and any, crime committed holds consequences not only for the perpetrator but also for anyone who may be effected by their actions?
Yes Daisy, victims or potential victims are included. But there are a few crimes with no victims, do you agree?
It is Dizmo, but is it correct?
Let's now forget that the person commiting the crime could also be a victim.
*not.
Find it hard to think of a victimless crime. The families of the perpretrator suffer if he/she is apprehended.
We're all victims of our own actions, but its daft that some actions that only affect ourselves are considered to be criminal actions while others are not.
//no such thing//

I remember being told 40 years ago when I embarked on my teaching career that there was no such thing as a bad child, only bad teachers. Needless to say, this came from someone who had long fled the classroom.

Consenting homosexual sex is not a crime.

Every crime has a victim. Otherwise it wouldn't be a crime. Simples! tch
Taking cannabis may be pleasurable for the user but it causes havoc to their nearest & dearest. My late cousin swore by the benefits of weed, she died too early leaving 5 teen kids all in her footsteps but with crminal records, due to the weed.
millions of people smoke cannabis with no harmful effect on anyone. Same for speeding. The actions may produce victims but mostly don't; so if you're picked up for speeding when you didn't hit anyone, your crime is victimless.

Thanks for replies, I am neither a homosexual or cannabis user, I just used these as examples of victimless crimes. I argued the point with my probation officers that there WERE victimless crimes but they wouldnt have it. But as they are a part of the law they wouldnt would they?
no point in arguing with probation officers, I suppose, everything to lose and nothing to gain. But they're wrong and you're right.
When people grow their own cannabis the victim is often the Leccy-board, who pass on the higher prices to the public

I'm your victim!
