Any chance of a best answer on your cap/comp thread mikey?
I saw this on the news last night and I thought " oh no.. it's on it's way here too." Our weather usually comes from the west doesn't it? Batten down the hatches, wrap up all snuggly and stay indoors and have a nice malt whisky.
temperatures freezing in all 50 states?? They have to be kidding. Accuweather says it's 30 degrees in Honolulu, and that's Celsius.
wonder if stuey is able to get across the fields to the bar....
I hope so, the poor guy will be lost without his wobblypops.
One clarification... although the temperatures have been unseasonably cold this fall, the extremely heavy snows shown in the link and reported elsewhere are the reuslt of a weather phenomena euphemistically called "Lake Effect snow." It's a product of rapidly moving, dry air, usually colder than 25 degrees (F) that passes over a body of fresh water and moves immediately on to land.

Notably, there are several cities or areas that are unusually susceptible to this action... one being Buffalo, New York, at the eastern end of Lake Erie, one of the U.S.'s Great Lakes system. I see they received nearly 6 feet of snow yesterday in a very short period of time and are expecting more today!
Apocalyptic snow clouds.... ahh the Hyperbole... It's orographic ie related to the environment in this case for the northern state's lake effect, you can get similar in some situation in the UK similar to Lighting Snow... good fun for photography mind.. ;0)

Wonder what's causing so much as far south as Alabama...... must investigate..anyway back to other forecasts
ah yes, we get the wrong type of snow here too, Clanad

It's only about 90 miles from Toronto to Buffalo, but what a difference in weather! It started to snow here earlier, and we have maybe 2" but it looks and feels like we'll get a little more. Snow way it's going to keep me from my wobbly-pops!
You're partly correct, Svejk; however, that happens to be Bensomemum, my butler blazing a trail for me.

Stuey...keep safe my friend.
they said on the news at 6 that it wasn't coming this way....but then there was going to be no 'urricane, was there?
It's not coming here, this system is a local thing, its small scale effects we call the mesoscale effects. The north Atlantic would warm that away very quickly it would just be rain by the time it got here.

similarly you have a phenomenon called thunder snow which can also be enhanced by lake effect

Thomas Scafernaker agrees with Slapshot - not coming here.

The loop in the jet stream, shows that at present the weather is coming north from Spain which doesnt strike me as particularly cold [OK the extremadura can be and also Sierra Nevada ]
I'm certainly going to check my larder, and top up my emergency supplies, as I do get cut off sometimes by snow. Thanks for the reminder.
