Hi Its me and my garage roof again. work starting asap, he has not asked for any money yet but when and if he does how much percentage of the job should i give him and can i keep the rest until i am happy with what he has done , thanks

Bluebird - Normally if a contractor has not made it clear that they want a deposit (to get materials and such) they will not/ should not ask for any money part-way through the works. Do you have any documents/ agreements that state you will make part-payment?
Unless it is someone that you know and trust - what are the chances that they will come back and finish the build once they have been part-paid.
Be cautious with this one if they do start asking for money now - If they haven't mentioned that you had to suppliment them with cash during the job prior to it starting, then I would stand strong and refuse to pay until the works are completed - and 'signed off'.
Make sure you do a full review of their works before you sign anything to say you are happy with what they have done - otherwise you won't legally have a leg to stand on should you find fault afterwards (unless covered by a guarantee).
Hope it all goes well for you x - and apologies for the cautious nature of my response - I work with build contractors and have come across some very dodgy ones...

No problem peas he is a local man and has been around for years so not worried but just wanted an idea.

In building contracting, stage payments are made on large contractors to avoid the contractor having to finance the materials and labour for perhaps many months. This would put an unreasonable cash demand on most businesses.
With a relatively small job like this, unless you have agreed something different upfront, there is no expectation that you should pay anything until the job is complete.
I assume this work is expected to take less than four weeks.

Yes buildersmate less than a week hopefully although weather may hold it up but thank you he hasn't asked yet so maybe i am jumping the gun thank you all xx
