If you are out walking ,out a message or what ever and you meet a complete stranger would you say hello ,good morning ,afternoon. Or presume they already knew that and just pass them without speaking .

You may not hear, especially if deep in thought (or daydreaming) and 'running on auto'.

Or I suppose you could be painfully shy.

Strange how dog-walkers always seem to 'open' and say hello, while joggers are 'closed', and pass by without even looking at you, let alone saying anything. Why is this?

Because joggers are concentrating on breathing.

Joggers may also have the earbuds of an MP3 player in. When exercising you tend to get yourself 'into the zone', it's the only way to tolerate the pain :)

I usually have my MP3 player on so do give a polite nod and smile, not always though if I'm daydreaming. I am always aware of my surroundings though.

I always do ..when I lived in London I also offered my polo mints and it was surprising how many folk melted and began chatting !

and men with kids - as they usually are marshalling the troops and need encouragement
No women and no one under 21

as TWR ... talking to a woman unbidden is asking for trouble
