DVD region codes is a provision in the DVD Specification that requires DVD players to be hard-coded to accept DVDs that is only meant to be played within one of six designated world regions. A Code 1 disc cannot be played in a Code 3 DVD player for example. This technique was developed to enable Hollywood companies to release movies at different times in different regions.
DVD regions are defined as:
Region 1 - 1: U.S., Canada, U.S. Territories
Region 2 - Japan, Europe, South Africa, and Middle East (including Egypt)
Region 3 - Southeast Asia and East Asia (including Hong Kong)
Region 4 - Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
Region 5 - 5: Eastern Europe (Former Soviet Union), Indian subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
Region 6 - Peoples Republic of China
Region 7 - Reserved
Region 8 - Special international venues (airplanes, cruise ships, etc.)
All you have to do is simply ensure that any player you are interested in purchasing is a Multi-Region player...this will play discs from all regions...either that or make sure that you only buy region 2 discs or region 9 which will play on ALL players. The main benefit of a multi region player is other than being able to play discs from anywhere in the world yuo can import them direct from the US yourself and have a much larger range of films available as well as getting the newest releases months before they are in the shops here.
Also not that many (but not all) region 2 players can be converted to play all regions. For example the classic 'Warfdale' player which I had you just needed to open the draw pres 1,2,3 on the key pad and hey presto its region free. Having said that if you can afford the slightly more expensive 'Official' multi region players then this would be better.
