Refusing Mail

Silly Question. If i get a letter sent to me via recorded (signed for) delivery, do i have to accept it and what will happen to the letter if i don't.

If you didn't sign it would probably be returned to sender.

is it perhaps court documents you're trying to dodge? They have other ways of ensuring delivery. But if it's just Auntie Minnie's Christmas cards, do as above

I know a very good reason for rejecting such a delivery. The Bs at the TV licensing place, who can not comprehend the address they are targeting has no TV unless told again and again and again and again and again and again and .... will try to be hilarious and start sending you recorded stuff. It saves having to claim the time/petrol money from them for going to collect their mail from the sorting office. Let it get returned and they stop that little joke.

It's nothing as dubious as that, Old Geezer....but i like your style !!!! I have a fully paid up TV license. Pretty sure the letter's nothing criminal or even civil....i don't think i've done anything wrong and if i have, i'm sure i'll get a knock on the door shortly lol.

Just decline to sign for the item/letter.

After that your not really worried what happens to it, are you?

If you refuse to accept it the letter is returned to the sender with a note to say that the recipient refused to accept it. So the sender will know you are there but would not accept the letter. Of course you could say that you were not the person named on the letter and refuse it for that reason, but that would not work for me as my postie knows me well.

clearly if it is addressed Mr Bamma-Lamma and you are Hamma ( no relation ) you say no thanks

it then goes back to the depot
and they may attempt to redeliver

you can track these things and the attempted delivery will be recorded

This has been a particular problem for me as a tenant is refusing to accept service of documents

I sign a lot for neighbours
clearly not court stuff

there was one embarrassing time when the postie signed for me ( oops )
and I said for chrissakes I am Peter P and this is addressed to Paula Prodgrass and the names are not even near !

Recorded letters are not tracked, nor is delivery re attempted unless requested by the addressee.

by definition, it needs to be signed by you. If it is not, it will be returned to the sender. It would have been easier to answer your question had you said in what circumstances your were sent the letter.

If it 's from your family - it will go back to them.

If it's from your local policee (id parade)...the consequences may be not to good for you...

recorded letters ARE tracked and you get a sequence and numbers and when you plug those in you can see where it has got to

within the terms of this conversation - so it may say ' this item is waiting to be delivered' when it is being signed for at the very moment you read it !

Court officials are paid to know this sort of thing


but then he declined to hear the case on some other stupid reason anyway.

So i braved i today and went and got the letter.

I thought it was going to be an official letter from my allotment committee ordering me to clear some of the junk off my plot. It wasn't.....it was from the Police !!!!

My allotment shed was broken into a few months ago (along with 20 others) and the Police took some bits from me for forensics. They letter was to tell me my stuff could be returned now.....phew !!! lol
