first they laid the problem on the truckers now it's the landlords that are forced to do checks on potential tennants. It's time to get this whole border business sorted, we are an Island For gawds sake, why is it so difficult?

As our borders are so porous, perhaps it's not such a bad thing that 'someone' somewhere has the task of checking eligibility of residence?

Certainly until such a time as the Borders Agency is able to find it's posterior with both hands, anyway....
At least your island is being invaded by a better class of people though
Lol Steg...

I wonder how many people come here on the pretence of a holiday. What can border control do about them?
Who will get the blame if a tenant turns out to have a forged passport? Landlords can not be expected to be experts on detecting false passports.
No one who is not in the security industry, and doing that sort of job, should be expected to do the securities job for them, especially not for free and without training. It's a case of seeing an easy win by passing responsibility on to those who have no power to object. One can genuinely claim it helps with the problem, and not have the hassle themselves any more.

[i](Company management realised this many years ago which is why the higher positions can spend their time on political maneuvering and enjoy playing the market game, since they have delegated management responsibilities downwards and convinced the fools that is how it should be and one is trying to get out of stuff they "should be doing" if not accepted. That is why we all seem to be expected to manage ourselves, know everything about everything and who one needs to contact to get something done, and convince them; or it's your fault, you are to blame. It's a good con trick if you have a powerless or a gormless group to lean on.)[i]
because that would have to be done by civil servants? And the public would be outraged at having to pay for it?

Surely we lost our Island Status with the opening of the Channel Tunnel (a Land-Link) in 1994?
Nope. We are still geographically an island, albeit with a rail connection now, not just boats & planes. A single entry point like that should not be a massive issue to control. But it seems it is. Maybe we should close it and fill in the hole. ;-)
// And the public would be outraged at having to pay for it? //

Would they really? I somehow doubt that claim.
Makes one wonder how we managed to keep 'Jerry' out 70 odd years ago.
"Surely we lost our Island Status with the opening of the Channel Tunnel (a Land-Link) in 1994?"

A pedantic point, Baldric, but not really the issue. Very, very few (if any) illegals arrive via the Chunnel. Most arrive by other means.

I most certainly would not object to taxpayers' money being spent keeping out illegal entrants. In fact that's what I thought was already being done (albeit not entirely succesfully). As has been said, once again it is people going about their lawful business (truck owners and now landlords) who are being tasked with making up for the deficiencies of the Border Agency.
It says in the article, the Landlord checks ID - if no ID present the Government has a contact for the Landlord.

Can't see how the Government could get involved before someone actually attempts to rent a property.
Aog The RAF
isn't the fact that GB is an island making it harder to protect - it's got a nearly 8000 mile border to protect
To little to late by Government, election coming soon lol
Bravo O_G!
Used to check all the guys I employed as labour. They all got paid via bank so no cash in hand

"I wonder how many people come here on the pretence of a holiday. What can border control do about them?"

Address the 'control' part?

Checked in, checked out again, like normal countries and if here's a scintilla of doubt, turn them round in arrivals. They can always appeal at our embassy when they're on home soil.
I completely give up with some of you.
You want more done about immigration right?
Why don't we make it harder for them to find accommodation?

Everybody else: Great idea!
You lot: NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Ausrtalia have managed to sort it out, historically our "rejects"
