In the plant reproductive process, seeds form inside the ovary (which becomes the fruit we know) after pollination. There are some plants where it appears that the seeds are carried on the outside of the fruit, but this simply isn't true.
When I first went to France as a 13 year old back in the 60s I was amazed to be served lettuce at every meal as a separate dish, between the main course and the cheese. No accompaniment, just lettuce tossed in vinaigrette. It must have something going for it. I was told, "C'est pour la santé" (it's for your health).
