The lintels above exterior doors and windows in our house (built 1906) have a coating which makes them appear to be of traditional red sandstone. Some of the coating is peeling off, revealing grey stone work underneath which I'd like to patch up. I've tried mixing sand into coloured paint it to replicate the effect but it's not doing the job.

Is there a product / mixture that would work better than a sand / paint mixture?

Paint is always going to be difficult. A good match isn't likely.

For a more natural finish, I would look at rendering the lintels using a local sand that is nearest in colour.

This isn't going to be easy. I can't say that I've come across this type of finish. Maybe you're in an area of the country that I'm not familiar with.

Are you sure that the coating is original? Perhaps the natural grey concrete was the original.

thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay in responding, didn't have an opportunity to log back in before this.

House is on the outskirts of Glasgow. Its a 2 storey semi-det with a few similar houses. The walls are terracotta brick with roughcast above them. Front window is a 5 bay window with red sandstone mullions. I don't know if the coating is the original but all the similar houses have the same coloured lintels which suggests it was, and rendered to match the red sandstone.

TIA for any advice
