Chestnut Roasting
20 Answers
Can chestnuts be roasted on an open fire as suggested in the song? On the packet I got today it says to cut an X into the top of them and roast them in the oven for ten minutes.

I did taste cow poo once.
Not on purpose, you understand. I was probably about 10 and out and about with my dad on a country walk. I tripped on a stile and landed flat out in the field, covered in muck. Without thinking I tried to lick my hand clean not realising I'd landed in a cow pat. The best I can say is it didn't kill me.

oh chestnuts roasted on a shovel.....and chestnut vendors in the street with a hot brazier and little white paper bags.....
If you want them to cook with you can also simmer them in water, add a little salt or not to taste, again pierce them before putting them in the water. Done this way they are very easy to peel.
If you are really lazy (like me) then Waitrose sells bags of frozen chestnuts which are much nicer than the tinned or vaccuum packed kind.
