it's already illegal - legislation enacting EU Directive 2011/7/EU came into force on 16th March 2013.

however this government wouldn't want to be seen to be enforcing it on its big business chums, would it?

Surely using what power you hold to better your own position is all part of capitalism ? The weak go to the wall, the strong take over the chain from production to retail for the benefit of ... well someone. A few individuals get very very rich, whilst the law ensures the labour resource commodity is used as required and has no real power/say. The market dictates all. Consumers are convinced it is for the best as it reduces the price. God's in his heaven, and all is well with the world. Plus on top of all that, it's Xmas (almost). Time to go on a spending spree.

Quite simple, if you dont like the terms dont sign up to them, find someone else to supply. If you cant then perhaps you are not as good as you thought and you have to take whatever terms are on offer.

er, no - but they're not in power now, nor were they when the legislation was enacted.
