If you have a CRB (or disclosure application), a copy is automatically sent to both parties.
This does have details of all any convictions, which the employer can then use to make a decision. (Someone who has been convicted for dangerous driving is a different offence to child abuse, so not much good not knowing what the conviction was for!)
You may want to have a look at the following: http://www.crb.gov.uk/Default.aspx?page=381
An individual cannot carry out a CRB check, must be an agency/organisation. In addition the CRB does not recommend 'portability' of a CRB check, so its only as good as the day it is carried out. So if you get one done today, an employer make not accept it in 6 months time.
I don't know if there is another way of you finding out about your criminal record though, I'm sorry. Perhaps someone else can help with that?
