Tv/external Speakers
8 Answers
Bearing in mind that I am technologically illiterate, can anyone advise me on whether I can use the 'audio out' on my Panasonic Viera TV to connect to my old - but still very effective - Coral speakers? These are heavy, floor-standing, wooden ones, each with three actual speakers built in. Will I need some sort of amplifier between TV and speakers and, if so, what sort would you suggest? Any advice on wiring or other necessities would also be gratefully received.
My thanks in advance.

These Coral speakers (from a quick Google) appear to be what might be termed hi-fi speakers, and they need to be fed from an audio amplifier. Then again, if you have these speakers you must have had an audio amplifier at some point on the past to drive them? You simply feed the audio out signal from the TV into the 'line in' connector at the back of the amp. You'd then be able to do what Mikey (and me) do - experience decent sound from your TV without spending a fortune.
No, you can't connect the TV audio out directly to the speakers - it is a low power output of a few milliwatts which needs amplification.

Thank you all for your responses.
You obviously didn't take me seriously, Fender, when I said I was (quote) "technologically illiterate". Sentences such as, "1st hdmi cable to hdmi output on device to hdmi input on receiver for hd audio, then 2nd hdmi cable to hdmi output on receiver to hdmi input on tv for video" might as well have been in Swahili as far as I am concerned! But thanks for your effort to help.
Thanks, too, Mikey and BM. When I said my Corals were old, I meant OLD...bought in Singapore in the 1960s! However, they still work perfectly with my Brennan, which is the only hi-fi equipment I have. The audio amp I had then has long gone.
I have no idea whether it is possible for me to link the TV audio out to the Brennan. At the back, the latter has a Line Out connection and an Aux In one. Is that where the TV Audio Out should connect to it, so that I can use the Brennan just as an amplifier?
See what I mean about being "technologically illiterate"? Thanks for any further help.

I've just had a look at the Brennan JB7 spec, and you are right, there is no reason why you couldn't feed it from the line output of a TV. It seems to use a 3.5mm stereo Jack socket. You will need a similar Jack plug to fit at the Brennan end, with a lead and whatever sort of arrangement exists at the line output of the Veira.

Yes it really should be that simple. Have you tried that yet? you must have one of these Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation knocking about ?

Or one of these Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
I haven't actually "tried" anything, Talbot. That's beause I'm the sort of 'handyman' who - if handed a hammer and chisel at breakfast - could have the whole house reduced to rubble by teatime!
Having said that, and having had a peek at the backs of both TV and Brennan, I'm convinced that the plug/lead connector you link to is just what I am looking for. I've sent for one and, at less than a couple of quid, I won't have lost much if I'm wrong. Cheers
