I gave up and went back to standard emulsion as I couldn't be careful enough to get away with the one coat, while two coats of standard are always enough even if you are a bit gung-ho with the second one.

Thank you for youe replies, I only wish I'd read them before I started using the Dulux Once Matt Emulsion! I had successfully painted the coving & from the ceiling down to the picture rails with the left ovevers of another good brand of emulsion, but thought I'd try 'Once' for the actual ceiling. What a disaster! Not only was it far too thick & gooey, as I was rolling away, the last stretch was peeling like an orange. It was nothing to do with the previous paint. I phoned Dulux & was told to that it was drying to quickly & to thin the paint down with 20% water. What was the point of doing that, making it thinner & being back to square one! I had the central heating turned off & the window ajar. They offered me a refund! I would never use Dulux ever again. We're now off to buy the paint we always use with no problems.
