Forget those who would wish the words England or the English to be no longer mentioned, 2015 is the year of the English, so forget the British and even the Brits.

/// I am stunned! ///
You missed out "at present" anyone else prepared to take to the streets in protest, without being labelled fascist, racist, bigots etc, etc?
Perhaps that is why we haven't until we have some brave enough to let those overused words to roll off their backs.

AOG - "You missed out "at present" anyone else prepared to take to the streets in protest, without being labelled fascist, racist, bigots etc, etc?"
The EDL are not labelled fascist racist bigots because they take to the streets AOG, it is because they behave like fascist racist bigots when they get there.

As you know I am always prepared to apologise when I have something to apologise for, but in this case I feel I have not.
You entered this:
/// Is it not more the case that some people think that 'Englishness' does not denote some sort of pre-ordained ownership of a section of the planet, but that it is simply a (seriously fortunate) accident of birth ///
And I answered:
So since it is a just a (seriously fortunate) accident of birth, we have no right to defend it, and its should be open to all those not so fortunate, good job we didn't hold that believe back in 1940.
Where have I put anything you have not said or even words in your mouth?
/// AOG has developed a habit of seeing words that are not there in order to shoehorn his patriotism into a debate. ///
If anyone should apologise it is you.
End of story.

Churchill wanted a United States of Europe. From his speech in 1946:
"We must build a kind of United States of Europe.
In this way only will hundreds of millions of toilers be able to regain the simple joys and hopes which make life worth living."

I don't "prefer to have a dig" at the English. I'll criticise whatever I feel deserves it, when I think it's appropriate. What you, and many others, seem to fail to appreciate is that it is perfectly possible to criticise something while at the same time recognising its strengths. And it's possible to criticise ideologies, and to say that one is significantly worse than the other, without having to pretend that the better one is perfect.
In this thread you made out that a collection of anniversaries would make 2015 "not a good year". Initially, all I pointed out was that it was a highly selective collection, and you could equally well pick events that we should be less proud of in our history. It was meant as a jocular riposte to the concept that "2015 is the year of the English". A pity you and others can't appreciate that, and are too busy trying to root out "anti-English" sentiment.

I have a lot of time for your green and pleasant land. I've yet to visit a part of it I didn't like.
I include Tyneside, Norfolk, London, the West Country, Costa del Lancashire, The Lake District and a particularly picturesque Hathersage.
The people too are, by and large, really nice too, not at all like lager swilling cretins who populate the TV news. But we have them up here in Caledonia too, everywhere has.
It's good to celebrate where you come from as it is to celebrate where you've been.
There's more to life than wars and power trips.

I stand corrected.
Having re-read the sequence of responses with more care than I did when I first responded, I can see that your response with which I took issue was added on to my quote, not part of it, which makes my accusation of you apportioning to me comments I did not make incorrect.
Please accept my apologies, and the withdrawal of my inappropriate remark base on my misunderstanding.
