Faulty Electric Hob?

I had my back to the hob which had a saucepan heating on the hottest (sealed) plate. There was a loud bang and the hobs would no longer work, nor the oven. Because of the noise I assumed an electrical fault and asked a friend, a qualified electrician to call in. He could find nothing wrong - apart from the fact that the mains fuse had tripped out.
Because of the bang, I'm a bit suspicious of the hottest hob now. The others work OK.
Any comments please.

The chances are the bang was caused by the plate-in-use failing and blowing the fuse. I suspect that, if you try it, that plate won't work but the others will.
Stick a pan of water on it and try it, standing by it just in case. After a short time remove the pan from the hob and carefully feel to see if it's been getting warm. Repeat for other plates.

Yes, the "hottest" plate, as you describe it blew, and took the main fuse with it. Replacement plate needed, plus chairperson to fit it. Does not have to be an electrician job, unless you know a tame (cheap) one via your friend.
