Reading a bit about Dylan Thomas I saw mention of 'an insult to the liver'. I'm sure nobody ever said: 'That's the ugliest liver I've ever seen. When its time comes it'll need to be beaten to death with a stick'.
Is it just another way of saying, 'great harm'?

LOl...odd isn't it? We "damage" the kidneys, we "affect" the brain, "strain" the heart and "insult"the liver. We "lose our battle over cancer" but we "die" of heart problems. All very emotive phrases embedded in medical folk-lore. The Birmingham surgeon who "singed" his initials on the liver, certainly took it literally... ...
