It'll be very expensive at Christmas, and it gets booked up very early!

The Xmas just gone was our 6th consecutive Xmas in Tenerife and the earliest we've booked is October .... we've booked in late November before now.
It is a bit more expensive over Xmas, but it's the new year where the prices rocket. We generally go for 2 weeks and we come back between Xmas and new year, so we spend Xmas in Tenerife, but we're back home for the new year.
The hotel prices don't go up too much over the new tear - it's the flight prices where you get crucified. We decided to have a look at the difference in prices and wondered how much it would be if we went a week later and came back a week later, so we'd be in Tenerife for Xmas and the new year. The flight prices went from approx £200 per person to £650 per person .... needless to say we reverted to our original plan ....
Head to the south (Playa de Las Americas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje are quite popular) as the north is generally cloudier.
Gizmonster is right, it's sunnier in the south; you can see why here

thank you all food for thought
If you're after cheap and cheerful, I can recommend a hotel. We've been there 4 times now. It's got a nice big pool that's in the sun all day .... some hotels have the pool in the middle of the complex and you end up fighting for the few places in the sun. They have lots of activities for the kids during the day - the entertainers come round shouting out what activity is up next ... mini golf, darts, killer pool, table tennis ... etc.
The only downside to all this is the hill to get to the hotel. From the flat, it's approx 5 minute walk up a hill .... but it's quite a steep hill.
The hotel itself does have a few bad reviews .... but I tend to ignore them.
Just recently they've upgraded a few things.
This time when we went, we were quite pleased to find free Wi-Fi in the reception (useful for the kids ... or maybe yourself); the safe is now free (usually there's a charge for this), it's just a 5 Euro deposit for the key; the TV is free (used to charge for this). There's also a free bus that takes you down to near the beach and picks you back up (pick up a timetable from reception) - this is only for residents of the hotel, so no picking up and dropping off on the way.
The name of the hotel is "Laguna Park II" .... ignore any bad reviews .... unless you're after lush and lavish. It's a basic 3 star hotel and is usually quite cheap. We'll hopefully be going back next year :)

If you're gong at Xmas, you won't need air conditioning .... granted it might be a bit of a problem in the summer, but not at Xmas.
You can stay there self-catering; half board; full board; or all inclusive.
We usually book all inclusive, but on our last stay (Xmas 2014), the site that we booked with didn't offer the option to book all inclusive, so we emailed the hotel to ask how much it would cost to upgrade from self catering to all inclusive.
It cost us 22 Euros per person per day to upgrade - it's a no-brainer in my opinion :)
