Interesting question!
My father fought in ww11. In the line of duty he lost his leg. He never considered himself a hero, he would say "I was just doing my job".
Funny thing is I sort of know that my father killed people. He would never waste a bullet by shooting above people's heads. He would kill as that was what he was there for. But he found talking to me and my brothers very difficult and was always distant.
I heard a story on radio 2 about a man that was abused as a child. He became a drug addict (or scum as some people like to describe them) a male prostitute, homeless etc. He was now beginning to put his life together. I am cynical and it takes a lot to make me cry but I did when I heard his story. I would call him a hero!
I think heros' are around us they just don't look like how we would expect them to look!
