I need to buy something to wear to a wedding at the end of Feb. I'm tall and dark haired, mid 50's and normally wear trousers and a longish top.
The wedding is in a church with the reception at a complex next door, so although we don't have to go far to get from one to the other it could be really cold.
I though maybe I should start by looking for a three quarter length jacket that I can leave on at the reception and paying less attention to what I wear under it, only taking it off if its really hot.
Any suggestions gratefully received. I'm so clueless when it comes to clothes.
I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. I would always go for something that I can wear afterwards and something that I am comfortable in. Why not have a browse in some where like John Lewis. They won't bother you unless you need some help.
A nice coat dress or 3/4 jacket worn over a cocktail dress. You can keep a small bolero in your handbag for the evening reception (if there is one). or if it gets too warm at the wedding luncheon.
Within reason I'm not too tied by budget but just need some ideas. i'm such a hopeless shopper that I glaze over at the clothes and end up in the stationery section!
Same for websites, where do I start? All the dresses look so cold for this time of year.
How about a maxi dress with the jacket and a fascinator? The dress could be flowery and the jacket plain, or the jacket plain to match a flower colour on the dress? Simple but stylish.
A friend of mine was looking for an outfit for her son's wedding and like you she hates shopping. Her friend suggested going to John Lewis and having a personal shopper, they found her exactly the right outfit and she looked fabulous. She and her friend had a great time and I don't think it was very expensive. By the way I don't work for John Lewis!!
As a mere man, I wouldn't dream of making any sartorial suggestions Maydup.
But I will say this...wear some comfortable shoes, unlike all the memsahibs in my family who insist on buying shoes that they can't walk in for weddings, and then spend the whole day complaining about how their feet hurt !
For the sake of the men folk at the wedding, if for no other reason.
i agree with margo go for the personal shopper at john lewis or debenhams, they will bring things out that will suit you , you dont have to buy just try them on and see what you like , then tell them you will bring back your husband or friend as you are not sure which one ,then you can try other shops once you have an idea what you are looking for
Awww thanks all. I'll have a look for at coat dresses or consider a maxi dress with jacket. These are the type of ideas I needed. And I may well take a stroll to John Lewis as I work close to the local branch.
Mikey - whatever happens, i promise to wear comfy shoes! I simply can't walk in anything else and would happily go in trainers if I could!
