This is very vauge but does anyone know of and early 90's indie / rock band (american?), very similar to likes of blind melon and smashing pumpkins? I'm fairly sure the singer died but seing as how I can't remember anything else that may not be true! song I'm thinking of is quite mellow.

Any help is much appreciated - it's been bugging me for about 10 years now!!

Could it be Alice In Chains? Their lead singer, Layne Staley, died of a drugs overdose in 2002 at the age of 34. Their biggest UK hit was a song called Would, in 1993. I believe they were rather bigger in the US than over here.
Maybe Silverchair? They're Australian and the lead singer Daniel Johns quit because he had really bad arthritis at a young age. They realised loads of albums but theyre biggest song would have been "Freak"
Technically a 'grunge' band, but could it be Nirvana? Singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide.
You may want to check out, Stone temple pilots, nine inch nails and janes addiction, these were very prominent names for that era and type of sound, nirvana is the obvious one, blind melon lead singer did die in the early 90s of an over dose and did have a big hit with a mellow song that started with the lyrics, 'all i can say, is that my life is very plane' etc.....
The big (ish) hit by Blind Melon was called No Rain, if that's any help.

I was thinking Kurt Cobain & Nirvana too actually, when i read that the singer had died.

The only mellow song by them that comes to mind is: 'CAT'S IN THE CRADLE'

Goes something like:

"cats in the cradle and the silver spoon, little boy blue and the man in the moon..."

fuzzibear "Cat's in the Cradle" was Ugly Kid Joe not Nirvana.

I was just logging in here to rectify my mistake, but you beat me to it. It was originally written by Harry Chapin, who dies in 1981 in a car accident. I thought for some reason it was Nirvana who sang it, but later realised my mistake.
