I have read several articles about them and they seem vague about forward/rear facing, they imply both. Anyone know if they can read rear and forward plates and do the same distance/time calculation?
Essentially I was wondering if they were effective against motorcycles.

The link provided by you about the 80mph speed limit says that the new speed cameras are bi-directional. Furthermore they use two radars to verify the speed, so no white lines are needed on the road.

yes, I wondered though whether the 2 checks are needed one from front one from back in order to dispense with the white markings. Ie the white lines where a checking mechanism.
