I saw some second hand computers all with Lindows 4 OS on them. I was impressed at how it looked. Can anyone with experience let me know how compatible they are with windows? Can I run educational software for Lindows on my windowsME laptop safely? Thanks.

Its
a version of Linux that can run some windows applications through an emulator called WINE. Most versions of linux can do this and you can download most of them for free. I would imagine what you are paying for with Lindows is support.
