It is refreshing to see an ex minister admiting they got it wrong. The idea that diesel is in any way cleaner is fanciful. Lets get back to how it was eh? trucks and tractors. There is no need for private cars to be diesel.

eddie this is channel 4 and the telegraph.
So TTT where engine technoloy has advance to the level that some diesel can omit ZERO particulates or mono-nitric oxides you are still suggesting we force people back to inefficient petrol engines..... if that's the genius advice from the Tory party god help us
Question Author
not at all, slapshot but that's unlikely now with governments about to discourage diesel cars. The Paris mayor was talking about banning them the other week, this is just the start. Flog your diesels now they will soon be worth scrap only.
The next step will be Euro7 with zero NOX emission .
They will use Adblue technology which adds a water based Urea solution to the exhaust gas and totally eliminates NOX emission .
I think I'll hang on a bit longer.... governments have a habit of screwing themselves over at times
Well said slapshot, a bit of sense at last.
Oh great - a urea solution - so diesels will not only be filthy and smoky, but also cover our streets in ***.
TTT

Calm down and change your CO2 emitting petrol car and buy an electric vehicle that's surely your best option ☺☺☺
Question Author
great eddie but sadly the manufacturers will probably stop development if the governements start taxing diesel more and sales reduce.
'wee'
// "The quantity of particulates and NO2 is not the issue here" - yes they are exactly the issue //

Since quantities are the issue it is of great benefit to repeat the figures stated in the article accurately i.e.

"While diesel does produce 15 per cent less CO2 than petrol, it also churns out four times more NO2 and 22 times more particulates"

Four times more NO2, not 40.

ah slackalice another one fooled by the electric is emmision free brigade. A lot of our electricity is generated from fossil fuels so the polution is still emmited. Also it takes 5 times more fuel to generate enough to make a car go than it doesto drive the car directly. All it does is take pollution away at the point of usage and multiply it by 5.
Adblue isn't new, buses and lorries have been using it for some time.

It's injected into the Catalyst to increase the temperature inside and make it work more efficiently.
TTT

Only in this country though, try the figures for Denmark and Sweden. The only reason it fails because we are using old technology to generate electricity. Our government has again dropped the 'ball' by not encouraging cleaner methods of generating electricity.

Any vehicles using oil based power will eventually be 'priced out'.
I'm sure I read somewhere that the primary source of the active component in Adblue is pig urine.
Can we (we can) expect objections on religious grounds?
A note to anyone with oil central heating...you may be next in line for a kicking!
AdBlue process here. it is NOT made from Pig Urine as that would be offensive to Muslims and Jews.
The Urea breaks down to just Nitrogen and water nothing more! and as 74% of the Earth's atmosphere is Nitrogen anyway that will hurt no one.

I hope we still have petrol engines in hearses for a few years yet, the chances of a battery driven hearse getting to my local crem without rechargeing is pretty slim.
I'll worry about my old Pug 106 diesel's emissions when India,China and other 3rd world countries get their act together.
And I would say it's green footprint is smaller than a similar age petrol car, as it's done 147,000 miles. I'm hoping it will beat the 337,000 miles my previous 106 managed.
