Wigan Holiday

We are going on holiday to Wigan in June but have got a set-back. Apparently, the are NO HOTELS in Wigan at all, so can anyone suggest a resort within ten miles - is Haydock within reasonable distance?. We will want to go to the pier often - are the donkeys operating in June?. Are the shops near the sea-front? (do they have shops there?)

We had hoped to see the illuminations but realise that it`s a bit early in the year but if we like it in June, we may go back in Autumn. We also wish to visit the BirdWorld where we`ve heard there is a wonderful display of hawks. As we will be flying into Wigan Airport will we be able take a horse-drawn carriage into the centre or will we have to use one of those horrible stretch-limousines which Wigan people like to use (they really are SO vulgar! - cheap and nasty looking). Any information on the area would be very helpful, of course we do not expect to understand the locals but will do our best.

Loved it Dzug, I used to live in Wigan and you summed the Place up brilliantly pmsl. The road out of there is the best thing about that pie eating crap hole

as you all miss the point of this daft thread I will enlighten you, the poster person here is trying to intimidate me as i work in wigan. i don't live there, i wasn't born there, I have no links there but I do earn a living there, and a good one at that, but the person who has posted this thread is jealous of something, not sure what, but they are and they are trying to be insulting. Not workng, they would have to insult Mytholmroyd as that is where i was born,.

I always suggest to American tourists that the Brocket Arms up on Mesnes Road is perfect for them. As it's a JDWetherspoons hotel it's not too expensive for their weakened dollar, great pies from the shop across the road and cheap beer in the bar downstairs.

They are just a cab ride from all the attractions Wigan has to offer American tourists. The Olympic size public baths, a McDonalds, the historic downtown, the place where Sir Ian McKellen used to live, a 'Major League' soccer ground, the Uncle Joe candy store and a freeway to take them to the Lake District and other parts of England such as Wales.

Sorry about this but this is actually the funniest thread I've read on here.

I actually used to think that Wigan had a proper pier until I was told about a year ago. I've led a very sheltered life. I believe the pies are good though!!

Before I get slated yes I do know a lot of Wiganers and even have Wiganish family.
