Especially if you have not defragmented the hard drive for a long time. Don't be tempted to do it more than twice though or it will fragment files again. You should run the defrag utility once a month, It is just as important as deleting temporary internet files/cookies/etc.
I suggest you run Disk Cleanup on drive C: every so often too. This will clear any unnecessary files from your hard drive. (Don't worry, it won't delete anything important). This utility can be found the same way as the defragger. Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup.
Make sure you also regularly empty your Recycle Bin.
These are all important system maintenance tasks you should be doing regularly to maintain performance.
You really ought to have a good Anti-Spyware prog running too. Get get regular updates and scan your system with it weekly. Spyware can be a big drain on performance if it is allowed to build up. Never think you don't have any! If you surf the internet and download from it, then you most certainly will have some on your system.
No single Anti-Spyware prog will get rid of everything but I can highly recommend the licensed version of Ad-Aware SE. There's a freeware version but that has limited functionality. I also run PestPatrol. Between the two, they keep my system reasonably clear of spyware.
