In order to get into that little black dress for Christmas, I was thinking of doing the Atkins Diet for the next 4 weeks. Which is the best book to buy that explains the basics and can you use Clover (the butter/marg brand)?

I don't think the negative press on Atkins is a case of skepticism. Its more that the Atkins is not seen as a good long term eating plan and therefore not a great way to achieve long term weight loss as you dont get the full benefit of a balanced diet. I could give you a number of diets which would give results similar to Atkins problem is they and (Atkins) are unsustainable in the longer term. I'm not saying don't do it but I would consider something else if you wanted to do something long term. Good Luck.
Of course the Atkins diet works if tartanwizard wasn't such a numpty they would have researched it before giving such advice. The atkins diet is a short term problem with long term conseqences. You are starving yourself of essential energy for the brain, your brain uses glucose (carbohydrates) to function. You lose weight initially because the carbohydrate stores in your kidneys are the first to go therefore giving you the impression you have lost weight. Be aware that when you come off the diet you will put the weight back on and probably more if you have been starving your body because your metabolism has slowed down. That are other concerns with this diet so make sure you do your home work from both sides and most of all be healthy. Good luck
