Hi,
I am looking after a young cockatiel for three weeks. It seems very lonely and has come from an aviary and not tame. It is in a large parrot cage, I am thinking of getting Him( or Her) a mate. is that a good idea or are they happier on their own?
Thank you.

These birds are very intelligent like any parrot type bird, any parrot they do better with pairs and with company of their own species. I do hope that helps.
If you only have the bird for three weeks, then with respect, i don't think you should do anything. Talk to the owner when they return.
I would be livid if someone else mad that decision for me. Speak to the owner
Well said woof and AC

I bought them the first bird a week ago, and they would be quite happy to have two birds.I am looking after it because one of the couple has had radio therapy and must not be near children or pets for three weeks.
If it comes from an aviary it will be a big transition for the bird to be cooped up in a cage and a fair period must be allowed for the bird to settle down. A young bird kept on its own will become tame eventually, especially if you chat with it at every opportunity and show patience. Note that it is cruel to keep a bird in a cage without attention as it will think of itself as a family member and will pine if ignored.

If another bird is kept with it, they will focus on each other and generally take a lot longer to become attached to the humans looking after them.

Please read all you can on the the keeping of a cockatiel as mismanagement of any animal under your care is cruel.
