I have been through the old test where you were shown a few pictures of road signs at the end of your practical test.

I have also been through the modern computer based theory test method, when taking my HGV tests. It is true it is multi choice, but believe me it is a more thorough test of your knowledge.

When I took my car test he told me exactly where to go so I could concentrate on my driving. I was also tested very thoroughly on doing a 3 point turn in the road, which is a bit pointless really.

My sons test involved being told to follow signs to a town some distance away, which involved going navigating through some pretty complicated junctions.

I think navigating while driving is a very good idea on the test, but I know it was much more challenging than my test in 1976.
i think once you have a good method of teaching you should teach and have instructor. the benefit of having an instructor too is that they are not becoming too involved as a father/mother son thing they are just doing their job. but being involved in your kids progression is a nice thing.
