Windows Xp

I have a laptop running Win XP, yes old I know but it's very easy and straight forward to use, I think the operating system is win8 which it keeps reminding me is no longer supported so I am finding more and more things won't open,
my question is if I download Firefox will it 1. let me keep my own homepage as I have a personal picture on it. 2. if need be can I get rid of it if I don't get on with it. any help would be welcome.

Windows XP is an operating system so how can you have Windows8?

firefox works fine on xp. your screen page photo etc is your choice, you just need to unclick the box where it says " make firefox my homepage" when its loading. If you do lose it, no problem you can get it back.

you dont have win 8, ... xp is ok for home use even though its not supported by updates. what things wont open any more ?? if you keep your comp secure with a free anti virus /firewall prog, ie comodo security suite and run malwarebytes weekly youll be fine

I don't know about lap-tops but I'm still using XP as my operating system (Home PC) and its working fine without any updates, as is Firefox. As mentioned above I do have anti-virus (Avast) and anti malware which I run weekly. I also don't understand though what won't open etc...

Firefox should be 36.01 version... not sure if it differs for lap-tops.

I am very confused by your question; you don't seem to understand the basic workings of a computer.
An operating system is a program which runs all the time after you boot up. It watches the keyboard and the mouse and waits for you to tell it what programs you wish ro run. Windows XP is an operating system, so are Windows 7 and Windows 8.
You tell your computer what you want it to do, usually by clicking on an icon or typing a command. Doing that will start a program running eg, photoshop to edit photos, Word to deal with documents, Excel to work with spreadsheets etc.
If you want to use the internet you need to run a program known as a browser. Firefox is a browser, so are Internet Explorer and Chrome. You tell the operating system that you want to use the browser by clicking on an icon on your desktop or typing a command.
Can you please tell us again exactly what you are doing and what will not run? With the information you have given us I don't think we can help you.

I'm guessing the win8 referred to is actually Internet Explorer 8.

If that's the case, downloading Firefox will be no problem, it operates perfectly well with XP. You will be given the opportunity to import all your favourites from IE to Firefox - they're called Bookmarks there. And you can easily set whatever you like as your home page.

Again, if by homepage, you actually mean your background in XP, then it won't be affected by downloading Firefox.

Give it a go - you can always uninstall it.

If Windows XP suits you & is working OK stick with it, however as you are aware it is no longer supported by Microsoft & you will not get any updates. If you wish to upgrade to Windows 7 which I think is a very good operating system click on link below.

Those still on XP should only use Firefox as their browser because it maintains its own security certificate chain.

IE and Chrome both use Windows for this function and since XP is not being updated their security certificate information is out of date.

Be aware of the enhanced risk you take with XP. As vulnerabilities are found and patches released for later versions of Windows, hackers check for the same weaknesses in XP knowing they won't be patched.
