Since H G Wells died in 1946, I take it you are referring to "The Big Sleep". He was cremated at Golders Green on August 16th of that year, so I guess he's still 'sleeping' to this very day where he 'slept' in the 1960s!
Was it possibly the name of a cat - they spend a lot of time sleeping. The British Museum has had various pet cats from time to time - perhaps H G Wells was one of them.
Never saw the programme, so just assumed Pentagon had mistaken the decade. I figured that naughty old HG - the original one - had possibly been having an affair with a lady from Stepney during the 1930s perhaps!
