My daughter moved from the UK to Australia in January 2015, she left her car with me, which is mot'd, taxed and insured until the end of September 2015.
Having completed two months at her new job, she has decided to stay in Australia until next spring. I tink she has a two year work visa.
My question is that if I were to sell her car and cancel her motor insurance next month, would she lose her NCD, that she has built up over the past five years,
On her return to the UK?
I now have her permission to sell her car, but we're unsure about her motor insurance situation, she paid her annual policy up front last September, so I'd imagine she would also be due a refund from them.

A no claims bonus doesn't usually have an expiry date. However if you take a break from driving and don't have any insurance for several months you may find it more difficult to use your existing no claims discounts when you need to renew. You only lose no claims discount if you make a claim.

As I understand it, NCD remains with you for up to 5 years , where you have no insurance. You need to get the insurance company to provide a letter (unless you have her last renewal notice with it on) showing what NCD she has. You may get a refund, but don't expect too much - companies will charge "admin fees" for cancellation.

Thank You, I wasn't sure whether you could retain 'earned' NCD on return, having lived abroad. Would there be a time limit on the retention of her NCD?

That's great, Thank You all for your help.
It's generally two years.

"If you are not currently insured, any no claims bonus earned under your last policy can usually be transferred, providing it expired within the last 2 years. The period of grace allowed may differ depending on insurer and policy type. Some insurers allow no claims bonus that is up to 3 years old but with others it becomes invalid after 12 months. Some will decline to accept bonus altogether where there has been a break in cover."
