A pirate is starting his first day aboard his new ship and the captain is giving him the tour.

''There's the plank for trouble makers, there's the deck that needs swabbing everyday and there's the barrel for all your sexual needs.''

''What do you mean? my sexual needs?''

''Well, you stick your w!lly in the hole and you'll be serviced, anytime you want, except for Wednesdays.''

''What happens on Wednesdays?''

''It's your turn in the barrel.''

LOL, ain't it half day closing on Wednesdays though.
LOL. You're going back in time. I know of only one small shop which still observes half-day closing on Wednesday. In the 50s Wednesday afternoon was like a Sunday on the High Street; nothing was open.
Long may Sheffield Wednesday play!

I remember when Wednesdays were half day closing too. Very few do that now.
Yes Jackdaw, everything is 24 seven now. Even the barrel !.

nice one marval

some of the shops in my local town have a half day on thursday
This goes back to the days when the working week was 5½ days. Most institutions worked Mon - Fri and Saturday morning. Shops were open all day Saturday so to compensate they closed at lunchtime mid-week. It wasn't always Wednesday though, in some areas 'early closing day' might be a Tuesday or a Thursday. When the 5 day working week came in shops introduced the system of a morning off, whereby one day of the week you would not start work till lunchtime, then have Wednesday afternoon off, to ensure the shop was fully staffed on Saturday. If you were lucky enough to have Wednesday morning as your half day you were quids in, as you had a whole day off.

Isn't that how Sheffield Wednesday got it's name, Jackdaw. To begin with they were a football team of shop lads that used to have Wednesday afternoons of.

Very likely, Tony.
One of my clients told me that too, tony xx
In my city a large department store used to stay open all day on Wednesdays but close at lunchtime on Saturdays. Similarly Bainbridge's (now John Lewis) would be closed all day Monday.
