Why are TV history programmes so popular?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.It depends on the programme. If it's finding bits of roman tile in a field then speculating on how the house looked, that bores the pants off me, but others will love it.
The World At War series, on the other hand, was fantastic. First hand footage and accounts of what happened. Recollection rather than speculation.
I think folk who watch history programmes can picture themselves 'being there' - "Ooh, can you imagine having to do that, etc" so on one level it could be a form of escapism. Or they could just be really interested in the subject :-)
