I'd say get out more, in the literal sense. I'm in London for a few days, and I walk out of the office every lunchtime and head in a different direction. I recommend walking in London. Canteens are canteens all over, and I'm sure you see enough of your colleagues during the day.
The gym is a pretty boring and lonely way to get fit. Sports are much better, especially if they're outdoors.
Sorry Sarah, I didn't answer your question. I went for a walk and got some lunch from "the UK's first Hummus Bar".
I'd agree with Alfie's suggestion of saying hello to strangers. It's a delicate balance in London. If you start conversations with people when opportunities present themselves, they're usually quite pleasant, but on the other hand, if you suddenly lurch at people in tube stations and point out that the latest song advertised on a billboard is a cover of an old song - as a bloke did to me this morning - it can be a bit alarming.
Where do you work by the way?
I'm working in Soho for an Internet Service Provider.
It was quite bizarre having the conversation with the stranger this morning. I prefer a more gentle introduction than "That's a cover you know. _________ were singing that 20 years ago".
Still, for all the weird encounters, I've met some very nice people on trains. And they've met me too ;-)
