Flat Coat Retriever - Fainted?

Any vets in the house? Our dog, Dillon, is a FCR. They are extremely friendly, loving, family type dogs. My partner has been away for a week and Dillon has pined for him. When he came home last night, Dillon got so excited and after jumping up, licking and bring him half is bed, he went WIERD. His legs seemed to collapse and his head went to the side, like he couldn't hold himself up. It was almost like he had got too excited and was fainting or about too. Like he had hyperventilated. Can dogs do this? Is it possible? I hope so, he seems fine now and was v shortly after. Any ideas. Dillon is 7. Pog x

maybe he did just get too excited. Dogs tend to do that don't they.Probably all the blood rushing to his brain. Bless him, i wish someone would be that excited to see me. lol If you are still concerned though, why don't you just pop into your vet and ask about it. It would put your mind at rest.

it is sweet that he gets excited but sometimes, like when you have popped to the local shop for some milk for 5 mins and he rushes off to bring you every cushion and shoe he can get hold of upon your return, it can get a little annoying! you try and say, for gawds sake Dill I've only been gone for 5 mins but he still wags his tail uncontrollably! Love him x

Ah bless him, Dillon sounds gorgeous! i love retrievers, don't seem to see as many about now which is a shame.

I would get the vet to check his heart. Maybe he has a slight murmur and the excitement is affecting the flow of blood which then makes him lose control of himself.

Hi I have a yorkie that does a similar thing when he gets excited .. his head starts to shake then his legs go like he can't feel them lasts for couple of minutes sometimes, had him to vet but they cannot discover a cause he has had them fairly regularly for a few years

I have a 2 yr old, male, Flat Coated Retriever and he gets really excited too. But this sounds a little extreme. Especially, if it's never happened before. If you can't get him to the vet, try InternetVets.com or look up Dr. Billie Boyd. She has a Q&A site. Hope all is well with him. They really are special dogs, aren't they.

Sounds like he may be a little epileptic. And I emphahsise little. Our border collie did the same thing.

It may be epilepsy - best get him to a vet to check him over.

Epilepsy doesn't have to be serious - I know a sheep that has epilepsy and when she gets excited, e.g. if the flock is being moved or at feeding time, she sometimes collapses. She's in perfect health apart from this though!

My 13yr old lab faints when she gets excited, like going out for walks. This is because of a heart problem, its kind of like her heart can't pump the extra blood needed and she just passes out. Go to the vets and check it out!

Thanks for everyones answers, Dilly has been fine ever since so it probably was the excitement but will mention it to my vet.
