29a Sluice ("it's loose"
Sorry, you wanted 6 letters . . .
. . . meant 5 letters!!
Redistil ? reverse of bright = lit - not sure how the redis part works. Sider = partial spirit??

Sluse = Milton's spelling of sluice (sounds like s'loose)
Qm - I reckon 'Sluce' ('Paradise Lost') ? ja
The 'sider' part is a reference to someone who takes sides...ie is a person ('spirit') who is partial.
Sorry, John, your most recent response wasn't there when I started typing above. It's definitely 'sluse' with an 's' to fit the crossing word.
Before I saw your last post Quizmonkey I was toying with another literary connection Dis Liter visum by Browning Disliter Redistil
JohnAlex - it is SLUSE - given in Chambers as Milton's spelling.
Many thanks Qm - good solving!
I suspect that I - Quizmonster - was a member of AnswerBank before Quizmonkey, so I think we need to be referred to in abbreviated form as QM1 and QM2 respectively!
aok qm1 !
