Ankara was the CAPITAL of Turkey. It is now replaced by Istanbul. Don't mean to sound like a smart a**e, but there you are!

Just to be picky Anyeeta it's the reverse! Please see many references on the net - but here's a quote I picked up that explains maybe, your confusion:
Istanbul is a sprawling metropolis of 7 million located on the threshold of Europe and Asia. The city bequeathed its status as Turkey's capital to Ankara in 1925, but it continues to serve as the country's centre of finance and culture.
